Do Brain Training Games Work? An Honest Look at Memory Games

Guides · Published 2026-10-11

Brain training is one of the most marketed ideas in gaming and one of the least honestly explained. So let us start with the honest version, then talk about what is still genuinely worth doing.

What the evidence actually supports

Memory and matching games reliably improve your performance at memory and matching games. That part is uncontroversial. What is far less clear is whether those gains transfer to unrelated tasks such as remembering names, doing mental arithmetic or concentrating at work. The honest answer is that transfer, where it exists, tends to be narrow and modest.

So why play them at all

Because the skill they train is real, even if the transfer is limited. Working memory — holding a few things in mind and manipulating them — is used constantly in daily life, and a matching game exercises it directly. Attention is another one: staying with a task for five minutes without checking another app is a genuine and increasingly rare skill. And there is nothing wrong with practising something simply because it is enjoyable.

The three habits that make practice count

  • Short and regular beats long and rare. Ten minutes daily will do more than a two-hour session once a fortnight.
  • Push slightly past comfortable. If the grid is so small you never make a mistake, you are not training anything. Increase the size as soon as it feels easy.
  • Practise one thing at a time. Jumping between five different games every session means you never build depth in any of them.

What brain training will not do

It will not raise your IQ, it will not prevent ageing on its own, and it will not compensate for poor sleep. If you are chronically short of sleep, a memory game is a much weaker intervention than an earlier bedtime. Be suspicious of any site that promises otherwise.

A sensible way to use memory games

Treat them as a light, pleasant form of practice rather than a medical treatment. Play for ten minutes, focus on getting marginally better, and stop when your attention drifts. Used that way they are a genuinely good use of a phone: they are free, they work offline, and they cost you nothing but the time you chose to spend.
