Best Family Games for Raya and Open House Gatherings

Top lists · Published 2026-10-11

Every family gathering reaches the same moment: the food is finished, the adults are deep in conversation, and the children have run out of things to do. A television helps for about twenty minutes. A pass-and-play game on one phone helps for considerably longer, and it does not need anyone to drive home a console or hand a child a tablet with open internet access.

What makes a game work at a gathering

  • One device. If it needs a phone per person, half the family is excluded immediately.
  • Instantly explainable. If a game needs five minutes of rules, it will not survive the noise of a living room.
  • Spectator-friendly. The best party games are as much fun to watch as to play, so the people waiting for a turn stay involved.
  • No accounts, no downloads, no chat. Nothing that needs setting up, and nothing a parent has to worry about.

The three formats that work

Turn-taking sports games are the easiest to introduce: one person shoots, the other keeps goal, then you swap. Everyone understands a penalty shootout without any explanation. Split-screen reaction games put two players on opposite halves of the screen at once, which makes for loud, funny rounds and an obvious queue of people waiting to try. Board games are the slow-burn option for the older members of the family — chess and draughts are quietly competitive in a way that surprises people who think they do not play games.

Playing across generations

The useful rule is to let the newcomer go first, and to resist explaining the controls while they are mid-attempt. Hand the phone over early rather than demonstrating. Younger players usually do not need help with the interface; they need to be given the phone and left alone for thirty seconds. Older players often do better with a turn-based board game than a reaction game, and there is no shame in matching the game to the person.

The practical setup

Load two or three games at home while you still have Wi-Fi. Open each in its own tab. At the gathering, hand over the phone and let it circulate. Because the games work offline, it does not matter that the signal is weak in your aunt's kampung house, and because none of them needs an account, there is nothing for a parent to supervise. It is a small, free, reliable way to make a long afternoon easier for everyone.
